Who do these remind you of?

Filed under: Daily Messages — Mr Handisyde @ 7:07 am

Some great ideas and suggestions from yesterday’s blog. Thank you for those who joined in the fun and especially those who added comments. Keep them coming in! A few children and parents reading our weblog on the Communication Window at the Upper Junior entrance asked me who the famous people in the pictures were, so I’ll tell you that but not the answers yet as some people are still puzzled and like a challenge!

1. Hyacinth Bucket (from comedy series Keeping Up Appearances), 2. Princess Diana, 3. Su Pollard (actress famous for Peggy from comedy series Hi-De-Hi) 4. Tupac (a rapper) 5. Timothy Claypole (character from kids series Rentaghost)

Miss Oosterhuis has joined in the lookalike fun…..which teachers do you suppose these famous people remind her of?

Maybe the lookalike challenge will generate a lot of conversation, ideas and amusement at today’s Coffee Morning which is hosted by our Korean parents? Hope as many of you as possible go along and enjoy this weekly feature organised by volunteers from our school community. Don’t forget Upper Junior Parent Evenings tonight 16:00-18:00. If you haven’t made an appointment please contact Reception today to check on availability of times. Thank you

Humour in the staffroom as we were all getting ready for Parents Evenings last night…. blog a comment if you can guess which teachers these famous people remind you of… some really stretch the imagination, some are verging on delusional and others are simply (sadly) undeniable!!! Looking forward to your guesses!

The Strongest Link!

Filed under: Daily Messages — Mr Handisyde @ 7:15 am

Morning, Bloggers!

Just to remind you to cast your blogging eyes at the Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 weblogs. These are updates regularly and you can always access them on the blogroll links on the right-hand side of this page. Also today (testing - well OK stretching - my technical skills here), you can click on any of the coloured words and you will magically be transported to that weblog link! Impressed, huh?

Well, let’s start with Year 4. Check out the update on Daiki’s Shot of the Day, (I guess that was posted by Daiki!), Toby and Hina have also added to the 4w weblog, there is a new post about last week’s Science Day and also photos from the day itself. You can also find out about the new Mastermind winner and last, but by no means least, check out the latest Homework Sheet! Go Team Year 4 and keep blogging!

Moving onto Year 5, (don’t you just love the photo of Mrs Miles, Mr Armoogum and Miss Chisholm?), their weblog has been updated with an interactive challenge of sorts! Stand and Deliver!! Intrigued? Why not click on the link and find out more?

Year 6 have also posted about the recent visit from Philip Rose last week and they think that he’s a Force to be Reckoned With! I love the fact that Miss Brady and Mrs Smith have such a great sense of humour, just visit their weblog to see how their view themselves in the recently set Look-Alike challenge! Now where did I put my glasses?!?!

Don’t forget the Upper Junior Parent/Teacher Consultations tonight 17:00-20:00 and Thursday 16:00-18:00. Now after all that linking, I think I deserve a nice cup of tea…. maybe I’ll pop along to our weekly Coffee Morning on Thursday who this week have a Korean theme. See you there?

This week…

Filed under: Daily Messages — Mr Handisyde @ 7:59 am

Morning all,

Firstly thank you to Mr Pritchard for his last posting and to Miss Brady for her last comment….. Handisyde and May are sitting quite perplexed in the office!!

I expect Ms Welsh sprang out of bed this morning yelling “It’s Good to be Me”, remembered it was her assembly today and then saw it had snowed (AGAIN), and thought things can only get better!

Please remember that Parent Evenings are being trialled at different times of the year in both the Lower and Upper Juniors this year. Across the Primary School departments the reporting procedure takes the form of one full written report and two Parent/Teacher Consultation Evenings. At the Upper Juniors the first Parent Evenings this year took place in the Autumn Term. The second Parent Evenings take place this week on Tuesday 9th and Thursday 11th March. If you have not yet signed the lists that have been displayed in the Hall, please contact Mrs Warburton or Mrs Tressider at Reception who will be able to advise you on availability of space. We do encourage all parents to take this opportunity to discuss their child’s progress. Please note, as described in the information letter, parents will receive a full written report during the Summer Term for each child. We hope that this revised reporting procedure is a positive and informative development and we welcome your comments and opinions.

Keep those Look-Alikes coming in!

I Don’t Believe It!!!!

Filed under: Daily Messages — Mr Handisyde @ 7:59 am

Starting the morning with a grumble…forgot my suit jacket at home…..froze cycling to school…the coffee machine didn’t work and squirted water all over my shirt…took me ages to get onto the network and access the internet and email this morning….

I wanted to blog news to you with all the updates from the Year Group weblogs, but as the links took about 2 million years to load, I have had to accept defeat and give up on that. Will do this next week but in the meantime do remember to click on the links on the right hand side to navigate your way round the updated Upper Junior weblogs.

Have a nice weekend, from a Grumpy Old Man x

Thursday, and a challenge!

Filed under: Daily Messages — Mr Handisyde @ 7:42 am

Morning all! As you know Thursday’s bring around our weekly Coffee Morning at the Nursery/Infant School Hall, hope that you support the team and go along to as many as you can. Today there’s a chance for Coffee, Cake and a Chat and I believe The Little Gym are also going to be there.

I’d like to give you all a challenge ready for next week’s blog. Just for fun I thought I’d post some pictures of lookalikes for you all to guess the person who looks like someone else. If you know any good lookalikes, please send them to me by email, blog comment or tell me when you see me around school. I’ll post the most convincing ones next week on this weblog and invite all bloggers to guess who the look alike is!

Oh, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY today to Mr May!

The Upper Juniors and Wider World

Filed under: Daily Messages — Mr Handisyde @ 7:30 am

Morning, Bloggers!

Today at the Upper Juniors we are having Class 5Ms assembly. I’ve caught a bit of the rehearsal and think we’re all in for a treat this afternoon. In the wider world, today is World Maths Day, so get those brain boxes in gear and see how quick you can add, subtract, divide and multiply and even go online and play against other children around the world!

Forces in Action!

Filed under: Daily Messages — may @ 8:02 am

Good Morning Science Fans Everywhere!

Today, children at the Upper School will have a special visit from SciTech scientist Philip Rose, who will be working with the children in the Upper Junior School this morning on Forces in Science. Children in Years 4 to 6 will attend special workshops this morning to find out first hand what sorts of forces affect the world we live in. After lunch, Mr Rose will work with Senior School students, and tomorrow he pays a visit to the Lower Junior School. Many thanks to Miss Clare Jury, our Secondary School Science Teacher, for organising this specialist visit.

Yesterday, Mrs Miles led an assembly to start off our new SEAL Theme - ‘Good to Be Me’ - and asked the children to think about their own special talents and characteristics that make each one of us unique. We learnt about what it is that makes someone special - remember to think about what makes you the special one?

Have a good day!

Martenitsa

Filed under: Daily Messages — Mr Handisyde @ 9:57 am

Wearing a “Martenitsa”on the first of March is a typical Bulgarian tradition. The legend of it dates back 1300 years. It is the story of the swallow that acted as a courier sent to Khan Asparuh by his sister from the opposite bank of the Danube River.

During March the Khan, who established Bulgaria, was injured during a fierce battle. His sister prepared a small bag of medicinal herbs. She entrusted it to a courier bird - a little swallow. With the bag tied to its leg, the bird fluttered across the broad river. The package was heavy but it delivered the life-saving remedy in time. Upon his recovery, Khan Asparuh saw that part of the white thread with which the bag was tied was coloured red from the blood of the swallow. He tied the thread to his hand as a symbol of salvation. Bulgarians followed his example.

Since then, upon the first breeze from the South, Bulgarian women twist red and white threads of wool decorated with a gold or silver coin. The “Martenitsa” is tied to the hands of children, fruit-bearing trees, animals and bowls used to carry milk.

The colours of the “Martenitsa” Have a magical symbolism. Red - the colour of blood carries health and strength. White, the colour of light carries long life. “Martenitsas” are removed upon sighting the first stork of Spring and are placed under a stone.

A very warm welcome today to Mrs Jenny Tressider who joins as Receptionist to cover Mrs Amanda Stansfield who is on maternity leave. This week’s Coffee Morning is a chance for a Coffee, Cake and Chat…make a note in your diary and hope to see you there!
